Exploring Charleston’s Parks with Your Furry Friends

The Conservancy staff is dog-obsessed, and we love seeing you walking and playing with your furry friends in the parks. As we make it through the “tail” end of the dog days of summer, the sun starts to sit a little lower in the sky. The daylight hours will get shorter, but there is still plenty of warmth and sunlight to capitalize on some quality time with our furry companions before the gloomier and shorter days of winter set in.
While there are plenty of fenced-in and off-leash City dog parks in the area (Hazel Parker downtown and Medway Park on James Island being my pup’s favorites).
But, our City is full of even more beautiful parks to get out and get a leashed walk or run in. These parks vary in size and shade, from large iconic parks for a leisurely walk down to the more pocket-sized ones with cooling water features and a place to take a quick seat and rest with your doggo.
The largest and most popular parks, where you’re guaranteed to run into many four legged friends include Hampton Park (60 acres) and Colonial Lake (10 acres). Some of my favorite smaller neighborhood parks to meet up with fellow dog lovers are Corrine Jones Park, Theodora Park, and Magnolia Park & Community Garden.
No matter the time of year or your dog’s demands, Charleston’s parks have a variety of spaces for you and your dog to get active, socialize, and enjoy the sights, sounds, and (especially for them!) smells. The Conservancy’s mission is to enhance Charleston’s parks for the entire community, including our furry friends, ensuring these green spaces remain vibrant, welcoming, and accessible for all to enjoy.
