In November 2015, the Charleston Parks Conservancy expanded its community garden program into James Island with the opening of Medway Community Garden. As the third community garden under the Conservancy’s stewardship, this 4-acre garden space follows the same structure as our other gardens, with the majority of beds leased to community members and the remaining beds managed by the Conservancy.

Volunteers, like our weekly Thursday group from Postpartum Support Charleston and our weekly Friday morning Gather & Garden group, help harvest vegetables and cut flowers to be donated to local partners. A pollinator foodscape is also onsite.

In 2024, Medway was the pilot site for the Conservancy’s cut flower program, which aims to uplift women during difficult moments including postpartum mothers, those leaving abusive relationships and widows, through dedicated volunteer sessions and donated bouquets.

In the spring of 2026, with support from HDR Young Professionals, the Conservancy revitalized the original cut flower production rows at Medway into a therapeutic space with 80% perennial plants and 20% annual cut flowers, intending to inspire home growers looking to grow flowers in their own gardens.
