The land that became Colonial Lake was established as a public greenspace in 1768 “for the use of a common for Charlestowne”. Between 1881 and 1899, oyster shell sidewalks were built, the pond was deepened and connected to the Ashley River, retaining walls were constructed, oak trees were planted and benches installed to create Colonial Park.

Today, Colonial Lake is one of the City’s most popular parks for strolls and dog-walking. Joggers and walkers circle the park at all times of the day and fisherman frequent this tidal pond. The park has numerous benches, a seating wall along Rutledge Avenue and plenty of open green space to enjoy a picnic, read a book or relax with friends and family.

In October 2025, the Conservancy completed a year long revitalization of the three acres of gardens around Colonial Lake designed by Molly Hendry of Roots & Ramblings.  The Conservancy provides on-going care for the park gardens while the City of Charleston Parks Department manages the lake and hardscaping.
