Summer in the Community Gardens

SAM HAAB, COMMUNITY GARDENS MANAGER

“In the community gardens, we’ve donated over 3,080 pounds of produce to date! Zucchini did great in the early summer, but it was a rough year for tomatoes all-around, due to the early heat wave and the constant rain. Eggplant, okra, peppers and sweet potatoes continue to do well, despite the heat and the rain.

We’ve started prepping cool season crops, including lettuce, cabbage, collards, kale, broccoli and cauliflower to be transplanted in September/October. The seed trays are pictured below!”

BECCA HUDSON, GARDEN PROGRAMS MANAGER

“June through August we have donated 450 bouquets to organizations that serve and uplift women in crisis! Our buttercream marigolds have been thriving this summer. We have successfully grown our first crop of lisianthus and look forward to harvesting more of it this fall. For our fall flower donations and subscriptions, we are currently planting cosmos, zinnias and some new experimental crops like safflower.”

Sign ups for our Fall Cut Flower Subscription open Friday, August 22nd. The subscription includes 6 weeks of freshly cut and assembled fall floral bouquets and supports the Conservancy’s Cut Flower Program. For every bouquet purchased through the subscription, the Conservancy donates a bouquet to women experiencing hardship.
