Run, Charleston, Run!

The 5k season is up and running with the Folly Beach Run, Pajama Run, Turkey Day Run, Run for Thanks, the Reindeer Run and the Kiawah Island Marathon. So to help you prepare, we’ve outlined some great running sites – packed full of tips, workout ideas and even ways to track your running progress.

www.Active.com – This site has plenty of good info on running, as well as other sports and fitness activities. Also, search for upcoming races in your area. CoolRunning.com is a part of Active.com and is good for runners of all abilities.

www.Competitor.com – This site has a Running 101 series for those new to the sport (how to pick a running shoe and speed training for beginners), as well as info on injury prevention and the latest on major marathons around the country.

www.RunningTimes.com – Also a magazine, this site has an “Ask the Expert” section and an area for runners who like to go off road and do trail running.

www.RunnersWorld.com – If the magazine isn’t enough for you, the website is filled with blogs, videos and runners’ stories, in addition to tips on running shoes/gear and nutrition.

RunningCharleston – To keep up with local running news and information, bookmark David Quick’s blog. It has results for local races and a comprehensive schedule of running events in the Charleston area.

OK, here’s one freebie site: MapMyRun.com, where you can, well, map your run. You can also share your running routes with friends. Track your own progress with a calendar, create goals and calculate calories. And, of course, there’s an app for that on iPhone, Blackberry and Android (check out the beta site).

Share your favorite running sites and how they’ve helped your running progress.
