Moultrie Playground Renovation
In November 2016, a group of neighbors came together in a grassroots effort to fundraise to revitalize Moultrie Playground. In years since, they have successfully raised over $300,000 for the project. The new design improves the layout of the space, adding more seating, new pervious pathways, renovated sports courts, and new gardens. Among the most exciting elements is an enhanced and shaded playground serving multiple age groups, featuring an innovative dome-shaped net climbing structure and a colorful rubber play surface. “A renovated Moultrie Playground will create a better and more attractive public space and another place we can engage Charlestonians of all ages in their parks,” said Harry Lesesne, former Executive Director of the Charleston Parks Conservancy.
The Conservancy, in partnership with the City’s Department of Parks, started construction in November 2019 and began with renovation of the existing basketball court and walkways, in order for the pickleball and tennis courts to be placed. The previous playground was removed, a rubber safety surface installed, along with the all-new playground equipment that is there today.
The revitalization of Moultrie Park has made for a safer, multi-use public space for all the surrounding neighborhoods, a destination park for all Charleston visitors, and another beautiful landmark green space.
