November 2019 Park of the Month: Moultrie Playground

In November 2016, a group of neighbors came together in a grassroots effort to fundraise to revitalize Moultrie Playground, and over the past 3 years, they have successfully raised over $300,000 for the project. The new design improves the layout of the space, adding more seating, new pervious pathways, renovated sports courts, and new gardens. Among the most exciting elements is an enhanced and shaded playground serving multiple age groups, featuring an innovative dome-shaped net climbing structure and a colorful rubber play surface. “A renovated Moultrie Playground will create a better and more attractive public space and another place we can engage Charlestonians of all ages in their parks,” said Harry Lesesne, Executive Director of the Charleston Parks Conservancy.

The Conservancy, in partnership with the City’s Department of Parks, is excited to start construction in early November and will begin with the renovation of the existing basketball court and walkways, which will make way for the new courts going in. Concurrently, the existing playground will be removed, the rubber safety surface will be installed, and the all-new playground equipment will be installed.

Additional renovation highlights include:

– Creating new pervious paths to better connect to surrounding neighborhoods and parks, and beautiful plantings to extend the Colonial Lake garden experience across the street.

– Creating a “great lawn” that can serve multiple uses and youth sports.

– A relocated batting cage to serve youth baseball.

– A rebuilt half-court basketball court and 2 new courts exclusively for pickleball.

Your help

As of now, the Moultrie Playground Renovation is still in need of an additional $30,000 to further enhance the ground covering for the playground and ensure funds are available for furnishings and other park amenities. This project would not have been possible without the generous support of the local community, and we are so close to meeting our goal to complete the project in its entirety. Please consider a donation of any size to help the Moultrie Playground Renovation by visiting our donation page and selecting “Apply my gift to a specific project” and choosing “Moultrie Playground”.
