November 2017 Park of the Month: Hazel Parker Playground

Hazel Parker Playground is a neighborhood favorite and a hidden gem tucked away on East Bay Street in downtown Charleston. Hazel Parker Playground is a park that has it all.

It not only has a playground, but also tennis courts, a basketball court, a baseball field, and an open field for play, as well as a dog park. Hazel Parker also has an Education Center with regular programing like art activities and games for children and families. Conservancy staff and Park Angels have been caring for the gardens at Hazel Parker since 2010 and have added new trees, shrubs, and flowers, including Hazel Parker’s beautiful climbing Peggy Martin rose. The playground was also a part of the Conservancy’s new fall 2017 programs with the Parks & Pacies Playgroup. There like-minded moms and dads met with their young children and explored a new park every week, with surprises and snacks were included.

Hazel Parker Playground was one of Charleston’s first parks to begin the bench dedication program in 2015. Since then five benches have been dedicated to loved ones and significant others throughout Hazel Parker Playground. Some of these dedications include Liam and James Deering, Edward F. Dougherty, and to “Charleston’s beautiful parks and the joy they bring our community.”

Whether you’re by yourself with your kids, a loved one, or a dog, Hazel Parker Playground has something for everybody.
