Leadership Transition

The Charleston Parks Conservancy has announced a leadership transition as Darlene Heater steps down from her role as Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director to pursue new opportunities.

Under Darlene’s leadership, the Conservancy completed major projects, including the revitalization of Colonial Lake, launched the new Bloom Charleston festival, expanded community-led initiatives such as the Ashleyville Food Forest, and renewed focus on volunteer engagement. Her vision helped build a strong team, strengthen the Conservancy’s financial position, and establish a solid foundation for the future.

The Conservancy Board has appointed Jessica Gibadlo as Interim Executive Director. Jessica has been involved with the Conservancy since 2009—beginning as a volunteer on the inaugural Party for the Parks committee, serving as co-chair of the Moultrie Park Renovation, leading both the Finance and Governance Committees, and serving as Board Chair. Her deep history with the organization ensures continuity as the Conservancy builds upon its momentum.

George J.F. Bullwinkel, III, who has served on the Conservancy Board for more than five years, will serve as Chair of the Board of Directors, providing steady leadership and strategic guidance during this transition. A Charleston attorney specializing in real estate acquisition and development, Bullwinkel is an active community leader with board service in organizations including SEWE and the Hibernian Society.

The Board will take the necessary time to conduct a comprehensive and thoughtful search process to identify the Conservancy’s next Executive Director, ensuring the organization continues advancing its mission to inspire the people of Charleston to connect with their parks and, together, create stunning public spaces and a strong community, while caring for 26 parks, gardens, and trails in collaboration with the City of Charleston.

“We’re thankful for Darlene’s leadership and proud of what the Conservancy has achieved under her guidance,” said Board Chair George J.F. Bullwinkel, III. “Our team is strong, our mission is clear, and our commitment to Charleston’s parks remains steadfast.”
