A Thoughtful Decision for Lasting Impact: Future Beyond Light the Lake

As part of the Charleston Parks Conservancy’s ongoing commitment to our mission and the community, we have made the strategic decision not to host Light the Lake moving forward. This decision was guided by community feedback gathered through surveys and conversations, along with careful consideration of our priorities, ensuring that our resources are focused on long-term initiatives that provide sustained benefits to Charleston’s parks and residents. By focusing on year-round programming, we will continue to make a lasting impact and serve the diverse needs of our community. We are collaborating with the city to preserve beloved traditions, including the holiday tree at the lake.
Like many organizations, we have faced rising costs, which have made it increasingly unsustainable to host large-scale free events like Light the Lake. The extensive resources and planning time necessary for this event—including staffing and funding—prompted us to strategically pivot our resources to create a more sustainable future for our community.
We are constantly exploring opportunities to expand our free community programming. We have tripled our offerings from 55 hours in 2023 to a projected 180 hours annually in 2024 and 2025. This commitment reflects our dedication to connecting the community through experiences in our parks while ensuring we remain responsive to community needs. We are offering more educational workshops, volunteer opportunities, and family-friendly programs that enrich the quality of life in our parks and across more neighborhoods throughout our City.
In addition to programming, we are deeply committed to enhancing our park spaces. The revitalization of Colonial Lake is already underway, thanks to a successful fundraising effort that exceeded our goal of $125,000. This project will not only beautify the park but also improve its functionality and sustainability. By planting species that mitigate flooding, tolerate saltwater exposure, and attract beneficial wildlife, we are ensuring that Colonial Lake remains a cherished community asset for generations to come. By reallocating our efforts, we can make major investments in other impactful projects; a few examples include:
Mulberry Park Food Forest: A community-driven initiative promoting food access and education while fostering environmental stewardship.
Charleston Trees: This project enhances urban canopy cover and promotes biodiversity, ensuring our city remains vibrant and green.
Art in the Parks: An innovative program that merges creativity with nature, providing a platform for local artists while enriching our park spaces.
We are excited to support the many longstanding and new events that celebrate our community this holiday season and look forward to the incredible opportunities that lie ahead in our parks. Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we work together to enhance the green spaces and parks that enrich our lives.
