January 2019 Park Angel of the Month: Mari Barrett

Mari Barett began volunteering with the Charleston Parks Conservancy more than five years ago. According to Mari, “I became a Lead Park Angel because I wanted to be involved in all possible aspects that I felt I could be of assistance. I wanted to share all that the Conservancy does so well for our community–getting people into and loving the many parks!”

Before joining Garden in the Parks Mari always had a passion for flowers and gardening. Mari also works part-time for Anne Cauthen Garden and Floral Design on Kiawah Island.

Over the years, Mari has taken an active role outside of Garden in the Parks and has joined a number of event committees including Teddy Bear Picnic, Jazz Brunch, and, as she describes, “Any committee that needs a hand!”

“My first committee was the Colonial Lake Committee which focused on getting everything ready for the grand reopening,” Mari said. “Around that time, I joined Teddy Bear Picnic, which I’ve been a part of for the past five years. I love how fun and creative it is. Every year we do something a little different. Last year, we added the Teddy Bear Fashion show, which was a lot of fun and this year we’re looking to add a Teddy Bear Tea Party. Brainstorming ideas like that with other creative minds is wonderful.”
