Hey, Lowcountry, ‘Thanks for Giving!’

Greek fable writer Aesop said, “No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.” That statement certainly rings true for us here at the Parks Conservancy. We may think planting one daffodil bulb, watering one shrub or trimming one rose bush is a small act but it has tremendous value to our parks and the people who use them.

That’s why the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) has designated Nov. 15 as National Philanthropy Day. They describe it as “a day set aside to recognize and pay tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy – and those people active in the philanthropic community – have made to our lives, our communities and our world.”

AFP chapters around the country will mark the day with special events honoring philanthropists who are making a difference in their communities. Locally, the Coastal Community Foundation is sponsoring the sixth annual Philanthropy Week in the Lowcountry with the theme “Thanks for Giving.” The schedule is filled with great events and programs, including the National Philanthropy Day Luncheon hosted by the Lowcountry AFP chapter and Charleston Magazine’s annual Giving Back Awards.

Also, there’s a Philanthropy Week Twitter Contest where folks will be tweeting about groups, individuals or nonprofits that make a difference in our community.

So whether it’s a tweet or a financial contribution, as Aesop says, “No act of kindness is too small.” Besides, you never know the impact that flower will have when it blooms.

Let us know how you’re celebrating National Philanthropy Day. Is there an organization or a volunteer that has a special place in your life?
