Initial Planting, April 2010


Rosa ‘Knockout’- Blush Pink Knockout Rose

– Hardy shrub rose with flushes from April until first frost. Hard winter prune required in February and a light summer prune in June. Like full sun and well-drained soil. Mostly disease free, some aphid problems.


Crinum ‘Stars and Stripes’- Stars and Stripes Crinum Lily

– Clumping bulb with long, rich green foliage. White flowers with red/pink stripes on 2 foot stalks in summer. Like full sun, moderately salt tolerant. Foliage damaged by cold temperatures but come back strong.


Rudbeckia hirta– Gloriosa Daisy, Black-Eyed Susan

– Upright annual wildflower with bright yellow, daisy-like flower petals and dark centers on 1-2 foot long stems. Flowers summer and into fall. Like full sun.


Ruellia brittonia– Dwarf Mexican Petunia

– Dwarf evergreen mounding perennial. Rich green foliage with many blue/purple flowers. Likes full sun to part shade.


Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Prostratus’- Prostrate Rosemary

– Woody perennial herb with fragrant, evergreen foliage. Great drought-tolerant, texture rich plant. Long bloom periods in warm climates with blue/purple flowers.


Eucomis ‘Sparkling Burgundy’- Pineapple Lily

– Rich purple, clumping accent plant. Produces long bloom stalk in summer that resembles a pineapple, which is where it derives its name, since it is in the Asparagus family, not the Pineapple family. Like shade, filtered sun.


Polystichum polyblepharum – Tassel Fern

– Great low maintenance fern that loves moist, shady woodland areas and borders. Name means “many rows, many eyelashes”, evidenced by it’s many fine tassels/leaflets.


Loropetalum chinensis– Loropetalum, Chinese Fringe Bush

– Evergreen shrub with rich green to purple/red foliage. Rich, showy pink flowers in spring and fall. Like full sun to part shade.


Callicarpa americana– American Beautyberry

– Deciduous, woody shrub. Like full sun to part shade, more fruit set in full sun. Not salt tolerant. Rich magenta berries in late summer and through fall, remaining on bare stems after leaves drop. Low maintenance plant that attracts birds.

  Pennisetum purpureum ‘Princess Molly’- Perennial Dwarf Fountain Grass

– Dwarf foliage plant rich with greens and purples. Great accent plant. Exhausted brown foliage tears away for easy maintenance.


Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii – Turk’s Cap, Wax Mallow

– Evergreen shrub in the Hibiscus family. Can become tree and vine-like. Rapid grower. Red, funnel-like flowers in summer and fall. Like full sun. Little salt tolerance.

– Upright annual wildflower with bright yellow, daisy-like flower petals and dark centers on 1-2 foot long stems. Flowers summer and into fall. Like full sun.


 Erythrina herbacea – Native Coral Bean

– Native semi-evergreen shrub with clumping, irregular growth. Rich red tubular flowers. Like full sun to part shade. Great to use to achieve a natural effect.


 Caladium bicolor ‘Kathleen’- Fancy Leafed Caladium

– Tuberous foliage plant. Grown as annual in South Carolina. Many different cultivars with many different colors. Plant corms in May when soil becomes warm enough.


Justicia brandegeana– Shrimp Plant

– Evergreen leggy shrub. White and red flowers in summer and fall that resemble shrimp. Like full sun. Hummingbird attractor.


Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’- Mona Lavender Plectranthus

– Herbaceous shrub with rich green/purple foliage. Treated as an annual in South Carolina. Bright purple, tubular flower clumps in summer and fall. Likes shade and part sun.


Asparagus densiflorus ‘Sprengeri’- Asparagus Fern

– Evergreen, perennial, tuberous groundcover. Like full sun to part shade. Drought tolerant, low maintenance ground cover and border plant.


Salvia elegans – Pineapple Sage

– Perennial shrub with rich red, tubular flowers. Long bloom period. Attracts hummingbirds.
