Horticulture Happy Hour: Camellia Garden Party
February 10 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
We welcome Dan Clayton, camellia expert and historian, to the beautiful Rose Pavilion at Hampton Park. This workshop will focus on this history of the camellias, highlighting Camellia japonica. Topics covered will include propagation, breeding, integrated pest management, and proper planting techniques.
Guests will enjoy charcuterie and snacks in the garden and will receive 1 free drink ticket. Camellia sinensis is the basis for tea, so our cocktail list will have several tea infused mocktails, as well as beer and wine.
Camellias, daphne, and other winter favorites will be available for purchase.
More about Dan – Dan Clayton has owned and operated a landscape and construction company Paradise Inc. for 40 years in Columbia, SC. He is also an Ancient and Historic Camellia grower at his plant nursery, Paradise Plants Plus where he grows large specimen Camellias for botanical gardens and private clients.
Dan has a passion for the research, history and propagation techniques needed to grow large Camellias from cuttings. He loves the stories of the older varieties, how they came to be and who developed these beautiful “Winter Roses”. He has been featured on the PBS show “Making it Grow” and enjoys speaking to larger Garden Club groups when his time permits.
