Beating the Winter Blahs with a Walk in the Park

This week we experienced some true winter weather. OK, it might not have been full blizzard conditions, but it was winter weather for us Southerners and especially the folks from the North who moved here to escape ice, sleet and snow.

With highs barely topping 40 degrees, it’s easy to get a case of the winter blahs. But rather than complain about the chill, try embracing what winter has to offer and head to the park.

You know those swings at Waterfront Park that are filled with tourists each summer? Well, now’s your chance to enjoy one.

Grab a coffee from the Starbucks across the street and make a few laps around Marion Square – it’s a good way to stay warm and sneak in a little exercise.

If you have dogs, there’s a good chance they’ve been locked up in the house avoiding the wet and cold. Grab a tennis ball or Frisbee and hit Hampton Park, which has a dog run, to let your four-legged friend burn off some excess energy.

Do be safe in cold temperatures though. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has an online resource with tips and information about winter weather safety. The National Weather Service also has good information on winter weather safety.

What are your ideas for beating the winter woes? Remember, we’ll all be complaining about the heat soon enough so soak up a little cool air before July hits!
