A Walk in the Park: Hazel Parker Playground

Hazel Parker Playground on East Bay Street is one of our city’s busiest parks with a playground, small dog run and a recreation center bustling with classes and activities. The park is in one of the peninsula’s most picturesque areas, just steps from The Battery.

The park’s namesake, Hazel V. Parker, passed away on Saturday just one day before her 89th birthday. She spent more than 45 years as a recreation supervisor for the park. According to an article in The Post and Courier, Parker coached basketball, track and boxing along with teaching arts and crafts.

We have an extensive group of volunteer Park Angels who keep the spirit of Parker going as they work in the park to make it beautiful and inviting to residents and visitors. The park’s gardens were renovated in April 2010 and plantings along the tennis courts and playground were updated.

If you’ve never been to Hazel Parker Playground, stop by during one of these upcoming city events that will be hosted at the park:

Movie Night: 6:30-8:30 p.m. on March 11.
Summer Camp: June 6 to Aug. 12. A 10-week camp for ages 4 to 10. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. April 1 at Hazel Parker Playground.
