Finding Hazel Parker Playground in Bloom

Hazel Parker PLayground Sign

Hazel Parker Playground is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Conservancy's efforts to bring a garden into this park.  This is the first project where the City's Recreation Department worked with the Conservancy to install the new planting. Many thanks to Crystal for all her help in the garden. The volunteer Park Angels and Conservancy staff garden in the space year round.

The new signage was just installed as a way to mark the one-year anniversary, but more importantly, to provide the park with easy identification.

The entrance signage planting bed consists of caladiums, Mona Lavendar plectranthus and the shrimp plant, Justicia brandegeana, all pictured here.

Rudbeckia hirta

Brown-eyed Susan, Rudbeckia hirta, was one of the original plants grown in this garden starting in late May 2010. Many were happy enough to return this year, flowering throughout the summer and early fall.

The plantings have to take abuse being so close to the walkways where they can get stomped on by active feet, various size balls and equipment that finds its way into the planting beds. All have overcome the harsh conditions with flying colors. Pink Knockout rose, purple Princess Molly Grass and Brown-eyed Susans are all in full bloom in the June garden.

Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy'

The unique burgundy foliage of the pineapple lily, Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy,' is seen mixed with Princess Molly grass, pineapple sage and rosemary.
