This is one of the best kept secrets in Charleston. The Gateway Walk is a free walking tour right in the heart of the historic district that connects city churchyards, garden areas and hidden courtyards. It takes you away from the sidewalk viewpoint and into the secret places in the middle of four city blocks. Entering from Church Street across from St. Philip's Episcopal Church, you amble through four churchyards, through the gardens of the Charleston Library Society and the Gibbes Museum of Art. The Gateway Walk is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
The garden courtyard is also available to rent for outdoor weddings, receptions and other events. Learn more about this by contacting the Gibbes Museum of Art.
This public garden is a wonderful spot to come sit, read and enjoy the shade of large southern magnolia trees and listen to the fountain.
