Courtyard Garden at the Gibbes Museum
Park Details:
- Location: , , South Carolina
- Size: .5 Acres
- Directions
A courtyard garden located behind the Gibbes Museum of Art on Meeting Street. The garden is the center for the Garden Walk.
This is one of the best kept secrets in Charleston. The Gateway Walk is a free walking tour right in the heart of the historic district that connects city churchyards, garden areas and hidden courtyards. It takes you away from the sidewalk viewpoint and into the secret places in the middle of four city blocks. Entering from Church Street across from St. Philip's Episcopal Church, you amble through four churchyards, through the gardens of the Charleston Library Society and the Gibbes Museum of Art. The Gateway Walk is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
The garden courtyard is also available to rent for outdoor weddings, receptions and other events. Learn more about this by contacting the Gibbes Museum of Art.
This public garden is a wonderful spot to come sit, read and enjoy the shade of large southern magnolia trees and listen to the fountain.
Conservancy Activity:
As of July 2010, the Conservancy is managing the care for renovated plantings in the courtyard garden directly behind the Gibbes Museum building. The new plantings focus on a diverse selection of perennials, small shrubs and seasonal bulbs. This shade garden is one of several to be renovated in the next few years. The garden is a cooperative relationship between the Women’s Council of the Carolina Art Association, a volunteer group of the Gibbes Museum of Art and the Conservancy. Regular Garden in the Parks days are held to care for this developing garden.
