CHARLESTON, S.C. –Teddy bears will be on parade in Hampton Park once again this fall as the Charleston Parks Conservancy hosts its second annual Teddy Bear Picnic featuring live music from Sol Driven Train. The free event is from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10.
The highlight of the picnic will be a teddy bear parade, and Sol Driven Train will perform kid-friendly tunes from its Tajar Tracks albums. Additionally, there will be a variety of children’s activities, including face painting, seed planting, cookie decorating, bubbles and a dunking booth. Homespun Hoops also will be on hand to give pointers on the art of hula hooping.
A special Teddy Bear Picnic geocache will be hidden in Hampton Park as well. Described as a “high-tech scavenger hunt,” participants use coordinates and a GPS system to track down the hidden container of prizes. The Conservancy recently hid caches in Brittlebank Park, Chapel Street Fountain Park, Simonton Park and Wragg Square.
Families can bring a picnic, or vendors will have food available for purchase, including treats from Baby Bear’s Sweet Shop. The Conservancy will be selling gifts and apparel, including children’s T-shirts. Attendees also can register for a chance to win an iPad in the Papa Bear Giveaway or a Mama Bear Gift Basket, including a manicure/pedicure and a car wash.
The Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to further beautifying City of Charleston parks and green spaces. Its volunteer force of Park Angels will be at the picnic, sharing information about the Conservancy and ways to get involved in its mission.
“We had such an incredible response to last year’s event, we just had to do it again,” says Jim Martin, executive director. “This is a great way for families to come out and enjoy the park on a Sunday afternoon and it’s a reminder of what an incredible – and free – resource our public parks can be.”
