If it seemed everywhere you looked at the end of April you saw Park Angels planting, digging and watering, it was all part of the Double Dig. Over four days, volunteers with the Charleston Parks Conservancy worked in five city parks, adding new plants, pulling weeds and even teaching neighborhood children proper planting techniques.
The Conservancy added a new garden at Chapel Street Fountain Park during the Double Dig and put in new plants at Windermere Community Garden. And at Elliotborough Park, neighborhood volunteers added new plants to the flower beds, bringing even more color to the playground. This park is also home to an extensive community garden with vegetables and herbs. Even the youngest gardeners are getting involved in this park; read more about how “girl power” played a part in the Double Dig.
This spring the Conservancy began working in Cannon Park downtown and during the Double Dig added amazing color with pink blush knockout roses and crinum lilies. Those resilient plants were selected because this area tends to have a few more footsteps passing through the beds.
At Hazel Parker Playground on East Bay Street, the theme of the Double Dig was pretty in pink as new pink blush knockout roses brightened up the playground.
