This summer a group of dedicated Charleston Parks Conservancy volunteers are earning their H²0 Halos as they keep Charleston’s city parks watered and thriving during the sweltering summer.
Volunteers – dubbed “Aqua Angels” – are watering once or twice a week in a handful of county parks. The volunteers are part of the Conservancy’s Park Angels program, a group of volunteers who assist with a variety of park upkeep activities.
The Conservancy is looking for additional Aqua Angels to help in the parks. Volunteers can water on a timeline that fits with their personal schedules, and Conservancy horticulturists will provide instruction on proper watering techniques, such as getting the water to the root of the plant and not on the foliage.
Currently, volunteers are working in Cannon Park, the Courtyard Garden at the Gibbes Museum, Chapel Street Fountain Park, Brittlebank Park, Hazel Parker Playground, Windermere Boulevard Community Garden, Marion Square and Simonton Park.
Diana Councell is watering Hazel Parker Playground and appreciates the sense of accomplishment and pride she feels by giving back to the local parks.
“The beautiful parks were one of the factors that led me to move to Charleston, and I am proud to do anything I can to keep them beautiful for the residents and all of the visitors to our town to enjoy,” Councell said.
