Now is the time to start the summer prune. What, you say why prune this time of year? Spring's growth spurt and subsequent flowering has been overflowing. Late cool temperatures and plenty of rain have brought an abundance of new growth.

I was having a conversation a few weeks back with someone who was "getting into gardening" and the subject of growing native plants came up. "I am redoing my garden and I am only going to grow natives", they exclaimed. I inquired as to why and their answer was, "They are so much better for the environment." That's the Kool Aid talking if I ever heard it.

When I started gardening in my present location, I never imagined 6 years later, yellow flag iris (Iris pseudocorus) would still be popping up around the garden. This weekend, I spent a good two hours digging up another section growing in deep shade along the garden's back fence area.

I had to laugh at an article in the Post and Courier recently talking about guerrilla gardening coming to Charleston. Don't get me wrong, I am all for citizens rising up to the occasion of beautifying our great city, but in the middle of the night?
