Recycle Bins Usher in New Park Program

Recycle bin in Marion Square Park

You may have seen the new blue bins showing up in some of our City of Charleston parks. This is a part of a plan to recycle in all of our City of Charleston parks in time and with the rescources to pay for the new additions. I talked with Matt Compton, Parks Department Acting Director  about the new additions. According to Matt, "Keep Charleston Beautiful received a $10,000 grant from Nestle’ Waters North America via Keep America Beautiful.  This grant funded 25 bins and associated signage, and we’ve rounded up another $6,000 to purchase some additional cans (recycling and regular).  The cans are in our ‘new’ style – 32 gallon vinyl-coated tapered mesh containers with lids, liners, and mounting posts – and will be paired with matching trash cans.

The first installation will include seven bins in White Point Garden, six in Waterfront Park (plus six new trash cans), seven in Marion Square (plus new trash cans), and seven in Hampton Park.  Park users are encouraged to deposit cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles in the bins.  Parks staff will service the cans, bringing the materials back a central point in the Hampton Park yard.  Charleston County Recycling has provided a roll-off container for our use in the park, and will be servicing same as needed.

Our goal is to expand this program as the funding allows.  The next round will address some of our larger athletic facilities, and we are in the process of completing a grant application for this funding now."

If your park is not on this initial list, and you'd like to set up a fund drive to get recycling cans in your park, contact Paul Wentz, Programs Director at the Conservancy.
