Good Nutrition At Mitchell School

Besides gleaning crops in the fields to be donated to local food banks, some Fields to Families volunteers have been working on introducing healthy eating habits to school children. The first project presented was to the kindergarten classes at Mitchell School. Farmer Sidi Limehouse from Rosebank Farms on Johns Island donated an assortment of fresh veggies, even freshly laid brown eggs, for the presentation. Zucchini muffins were made ahead of time from the fresh zucchini and the children enjoyed them as a healthy snack during story time. The children identified the vegetables and were able to take them home at the end of the program. The school is one of the first Title 1 schools in the area to encourage healthy eating by changing the school menus and eliminating "junk foods" .

As the children left, they received pots and tomato seeds to take home and plant. Everyone enjoyed it and hopefully this is just a start in helping children to eat better and be healthier.
