This summer, a dedicated group of Parks Conservancy volunteers are braving the Charleston heat and humidity to keep our parks looking great. Each week they water the plants, inspect the beds and pick up litter. We call them our Aqua Angels and have crowned each with an H²O Halo! Over the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting our Aqua Angels. And when you see them out in the parks, give them a big “thank you!” This week read about Melissa Garvan, who’s watering Brittlebank Park.
Why did you sign up to be an Aqua Angel?
I love the peaceful mornings along the Ashley River and the animal life you encounter.
Which Charleston park is your favorite and why?
Brittlebank Park because it’s next to The Joe [Riverdogs baseball stadium] and along the banks of the Ashley River. People are speeding by to work, but it is calming there hidden amongst the flowers.
What’s your favorite summertime park activity or event?
Seeing people out walking their dogs or alone enjoying the beautiful parks all over the city. They all have their own beauty and it’s great to watch them come alive after spring planting!
Why should someone become a Park Angel and volunteer with the Conservancy?
Being outdoors with folks from all walks of life!
