Logan, a retired racer, was adopted by one of my neighbors last December. His previous life as a racer was probably not the happiest of times in his 14 years. But when he joined our four-legged neighborhood group he become full of life and was adored by all who met him.

Daylilies are many gardeners' favorite plants. They are dependable perennials, colorful bloomers, relatively free of pests, immune to heat stress, grow in sun or light shade and grow well in all areas of South Carolina.

Besides gleaning crops in the fields to be donated to local food banks, some Fields to Families volunteers have been working on introducing healthy eating habits to school children. The first project presented was to the kindergarten classes at Mitchell School.

Sometimes I just need to find a peaceful space to relax and regroup. We all do. Last Tuesday I found just that at Mepkin Abbey in Monks Corner where I attended a native plant lecture and tour of the gardens. I had been there twice before and had forgotten how peaceful it is out there in the middle of nowhere.
